Russell - John Quincy

Source: Waveland Independent, January 22, 1926

The community was shocked on Saturday evening to hear of the unexpected death of John Quincy Russell at his home in New Market. He was in his usual health. Mrs. Russell had gone to her sister's home, and Mr. Russell was to go after her. Shortly before the time he called on the phone and said he would not come over, but would tell her why when she came home. When she came she found him dead. His brother, David, died in a similar manner. He was born in Waveland about seventy-eight years ago and was the son of Dr. Joseph and Mary Penn Russell. He graduated from the Waveland Collegiate Institute, and for a number of years followed teaching. Later he sold subscription books. He had a wide knowledge of the best literature, and like his father, had the gift of rhyme, having written some creditable poems. Late in life he married Mrs. Amanda Wray of New Market, who survives him, as does also one sister, Mrs. Pauline Penn Brown of Zion City. He was a lifelong member of the Waveland Christian Church. Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at the New Market Christian Church and burial in Maple Ridge cemetery here. - kbz
